Photoshop CS2, 9.0.2, Windows XP Pro uptodate, 2 GB memory, Several HD’s with free space (>30 GB)

When I go to File>Open window and am selecting several files singly (ctl-click), Photoshop regularly crashes, opens the error report window and uninstalls itself from memory. I have uninstalled and reinstalled CS2 several times already. All current Windows updates are installed already.

All hard drives check out okay, no other programs show this problem.

HELP!

Do you have several of those several HDDs designated as scratch disks in your preferences?

Whilst you are in the Prefs, make sure your PS memory allocation is not set much (if any) higher than the 55% default.

Yes, I have three of my hard drives designated as scratch drives. The first and chief one is a 40 GB hard drive whose only function is to be a scratch drive. The second one is my boot drive, and the third is a drive on which all new files (in certain specific directories) are backed up on shutdown of the computer.

I do have my memory preferences set to 70%, but I have had it set to that level for the whole time I have been using PSCS2. That is now more than a year, and this crashing problem has been happening for only a week or so.

I will try resetting my memory allocation to 55%, but I am not at all sure it will help.

Thanks.

It might even be worth the Prefs (as detailed in the FAQs) just in case they have become corrupted through a bad shut-down.

(The prefs do not get reset during a reinstall).

I just tried that again, and this time the program crashed when I selected the first file in the "open" dialog box. It actually didn’t crash; it uninstalled itself from memory instantly with no message box and no "notify Microsoft" box.

This is getting really annoying; I have better things to do than fight with my computer!

The only time I’ve seen a crash in the open dialog like that was when the OS tried to create a file preview and crashed in the attempt. It could be a specific file, or a specific type of file that triggers the problem.

It is interesting to watch: the files I am trying to load are all .CR2 files from a Canon 30D camera. If I click on one file, the open box displays a thumbnail just fine (if it doesn’t hang), but of course when I highlight a second file, the thumbnail is not shown. I continue to click on file after file, since I want to handle them all in ACR. All of them are taken at the same settings and will be used to make a stitched panorama, but I need to convert them to TIFFs for PTGUi to work on. After I click on several files (varying numbers), the program hangs, usually displays a message that it has a problem and needs to send info to Microsoft, and then after doing that it uninstalls itself from memory and I am back at the desktop.

Once in a while it does this on the first file I try to open. Once in a while it tells me, for instance, that there is a Runtime Error! and R6025 – pure virtual function call. Sometimes it comes back with a message about trying to write to a location in low memory. It keeps varying its hangups.

I have reinstalled the program a couple of times, and I reboot after every crash so as to have the same starting point.

Why not just highlight them in Bridge and use Image Processor to make the Tiffs? You don’t even need to open them in Photoshop.

My PhotoShop Cs2 is also crashing. I just purchased a new Canon 30d which uses the cr2 files. That’s when I started having problems. My Canon Rebel used the crw files. I do not have and still do not have any problems using PhotoShop with the crw files.

When I try to work with cr2 files I get to view 2 or 3 files then PhotoShop crashes. Sometimes when I single click on a single cr2 file it crashes.

My PhotoShop has all the current updates and I’ve updated to to the new 3.5 plug-in and like I said I have no problems with crw files.

Also, when I click on File / Open if the folder has cr2 files all I see are icons. If I have cr2, jpeg or tiff files in the same folder I’ll see the thumbnail picture but the cr2’s only display as an icon. If I single click on a cr2 and it doesn’t crash I’ll see an image at the bottom of the display.

I’ve also received the R6025 error.

There seems to be something with the Canon cr2 file but what it is I don’t have any idea.

Anyone have a clue????

Thanks,

Paul

It just occurs to me that this problem may have started when I updated my ACR file to v3.5. I don’t think I had the problem when I was using v3.4, which still will open 30D files. I will switch back (if I still have v3.4 in my downloads file) and see if that makes a difference. You might try the same, Paul.

I deleted the v3.5 and did a re-install of PhotoShop. I then replaced the v3.1 with v3.4 and I still had crashing problems. One thing I forgot is I have PhotoShop installed on my work computer and cr2’s crash on it also. There’s something with the cr2’s and the plug-in. Thanks Jeremy.

Jeremy I think I’ve found the crashing problem. I had the Microsoft Raw Viewer installed. After I in un-installed the viewer everything seems to be working fine. I’ve opened a couple dozen cr2 files and PhotoShop didn’t crash. If you have the viewer installed try un-installing it and see what happens.

Hope this helps,

Paul

Sigh. Ok, we’ll make note of problems with the Microsoft RAW Viewer…. (thank you Microsoft)
