I’m trying to follow this tutorial and am having some difficulty:

<http://www.tutorialized.com/tutorial/Sleek-Button/15017>

It says "Select Rounded Rectangle Tool, draw a rectagle 150*30 pixel." How, in Photoshop, do you create a rectangle of a specific size? In Illustrator, you just click and you’re prompted for the size. This doesn’t seem to happen in Photoshop.

Later, the tutorial states "Draw a selection like image above." What does that mean? Do I create a new rectangle with identical dimensions? Given that I don’t know how to create rectangles with specific dimensions, all I cna do here is hope I get lucky and create a rectangle whose size is "good enough".

Also, the tutorial talks about the Gradiant tool. How does one even use this tool? In Illustrator, you just select the object you want to make a gradiant out of, you select the Gradiant window, and configure the gradiant appropriatly. What do you do in Photoshop?

I tried creating a gradiant and then hitting the area I would have liked the gradiant to have been applied to to no avail. I got this message when I tried:

Could not use the gradient tool because the
content of the layer is not directly editable.

So I’m totally confussed. Any ideas?

Draw a selection …

Gradiant tool. How does one even use this

How, in Photoshop, do you create a rectangle of a specific size?

The answers to all these questions – and more – can be found under F1

😉

Read, and try, then come back here if you are having specific problems.

When I type in "draw selection" I get the following:

To draw a circle or square
About guides and the grid
To save a path as an image clipping path
To export paths to Adobe Illustrator
Keys for selecting and moving objects
Select areas in an image
To use the marquee tools
To use the Lasso tool
To use the Magnetic Lasso tool
About tools and the toolbox
To extract an object from its background
To use the Crop And Straighten Photos
To sharpen a selection
Drawing and type tools gallery
About shapes and paths
To draw a wheel shape
To create a rasterized shape
Shape tool options
To convert a selection to a path

Drawing a selection does not strike me as being the same thing as drawing a circle or square, drawing a selection doesn’t strike me as being the same thing as creating guides on a gride, or saving a path as an image clipping path, etc.

So which one do I want? <sarcasm>Or maybe I should type "which one do i want" in F1, as well?</sarcasm>

I will, incidently, grant that I should have done F1 for the gradiant question. But for the first one (and maybe the last one) I don’t see how F1 is going to help. Unless, of course, your F1 key gives you different results than mine. Maybe you’re using Adobe Photoshop Enhanced F1 key edition?

Your problem I think is you’re looking under the wrong tool. Use the shape tool, pick rectangle:
[From F1] "Fixed Size Renders a rectangle, rounded rectangle, ellipse, or custom shape as a fixed shape based on the values you enter in the Width and Height text boxes."
It’s in the flyout at the top when you click on the shape tool.

You could also try reading the Help files with a bit more perception.

They actually are a help for most intelligent people.
