Same image displays differently in Elements 3.0 and Photoshop 7

I have both Photoshop Elements 3.0 and Photoshop 7 on my computer. When I open an image in one program, then open the same image in the other — even seconds later — the color rendition is completely different.

The histograms are identical, but to the eye, the image in Photoshop 7 is much lighter and more saturated.

I don’t know which one to "believe," and therefore how to adjust the image appropriately for further use.

Has anyone here ever experienced this? Can anyone suggest a cause and/or a fix?

Thanks!

Have got them both set to use the same colour space?

Aha! Thanks.

Actually, Elements had color management turned off, but 7 was set to Web Graphics. I turned off color management in 7 and now both images look the same.

My question now is, is that the best setting to use?

I mostly use these programs to process images for online microstock sites. They need to pop on screen to get designers to download them, but they still have to be usable for whatever purpose the designer wants afterward — mostly Web, but could be for print also.

Any recommendations?

I appreciate your help.

The colour space you choose to work in depends very much on what you are going to be using the images for.

For the Web, sRGB is good, becasue it approximates the space of a non colour-managed browser window.

Have a look here for a greater understanding of colour management.
