Photoshop CS2 BMP "Save As" problem

I am trying to run a recoloring project on several hundred Indexed Color mode BMP files. I use an PS action to convert the file to RGB mode, recolor the image with Hue/Saturation, then convert file back to Indexed Color mode. When I use the "Save As…" option, Photoshop defaults to saving the image as a PSD file. I have to manually change it in the menu to a BMP file, which then defaults to saving each image as a "copy", requiring me to edit the name of each to erase "copy" out of the title. The "Save As Copy" box is not checked. This is making the project extremely time consuming… and irritating. I don’t remember having this problem in the past. Am I missing something? There doesn’t seem to be an option to change this in the Preferences menu. Any help appreciated.

Since I have the italian version of PS I hope you understand which I mean to say. After reconverted to IC mode you must unify the layers even if the layers number is already one.

Thanks for the suggestion Emiliano. I tried the process without the IC – RGBC – IC conversions, and you were right about that being the cause of the problem. However, I’m not creating a new layer… In fact, the entire contents of the Layers menu is unavailable, so merging the layer(s) isn’t an option. Luckily, I can do this entire project while working in Indexed Color mode without the conversions, so it isn’t a problem this time, but I would still like to know why the conversion causes this problem. Again, thanks for putting me on the right track.
