After selecting, copying and pasting some text from one .psd into another, I can no longer edit the text. No matter where I click (with Type tool selected), Photoshop just creates a new text layer over the one I just pasted.

Any clues?

Something you did rasterized the type layer. Could have been for any number of reasons. Don’t copy/paste. Drag the type layer from one image to the other, or, select the source text with the type tool, then paste at an active insertion point after clicking-up a new type layer in the destination image.

Yup, test in PS has two forms.

Editable = vector stuff

Non-editable = rasterised down to the resolution you want.

In other words one is a fixed layer much like a digital image is "fixed" the other is "free"

Perhaps you can remove or hide the rasterised text and type it in again in a new text layer?

The whole point of the Copy/Paste was to avoid retyping. I kind of like John’s suggestion of dragging and dropping. I’ll have to give that a try.

Pasting shouldn’t rasterize it because you can only paste after you have established a text layer. When you look at the layers palette after pasting, is it a text layer? What happens when you double click on that text layer – does it select the text?

How are you copying it?

I don’t know how to tell if it is a text layer. The process I use is to select an area of one .psd with the selection tool, then highlight the layer I want to copy, move to the other .psd and paste the layer. Double clicking does not select the text.

Surprisingly, the effects don’t copy over, only the text. I then have to do a Copy/Paste Layer Style.

Is there no simple way to copy and paste an entire layer between two documents? Am I just ignorant of this very basic process, or is there no way to do it?

If it is a text layer, then there should be a letter ‘T’ in the layer pallette. Using selections is the wrong way to copy text(if you want to keep it editable) – double clicking on the T will select all the text, then copy and paste into the new document (click on the new doc with the type tool before pasting the text).

Or as mentioned before dragging a layer from on document to another is another way; maybe even better as (I think) it does not copy anything to the clipboard, so doesn’t use system memory.

In additions to Sevent’s good advice, consider this.

You are better off dragging the layer unless you do not want the layer style to come with the text.

If you only want the text, double click on the layer with the text on it. If you want the text and applied styles, drag the layer to the new image. In the new image you can change the text if you like by double clicking on the "T" in the Layers Palette.
