When I select Photoshop from Smart Panel, I get the message: There is Not Enough Memory (RAM) to load Photoshop. I know this is not true because it use to run and I also have 1 gig of memory.

uninstall everything that you installed with the scanner. go to epson’s site get the latest twain drivers then just load that. i’m running epson twain 5 under xp pro with no problems (and loving it after running the cludgy Acer sw from my old scanner.) Best 39 dollar upgrade (epson 1260 photo scanner) i think i’ve ever made, and i’ve been upgrading a loooooooong time.

Then, have a look at VueScan, from Hamrick Software <http://www.hamrick.com>. This is what I use. It has SOOOOO many more features for scanning than SmartPanel, and it works with TONS of different scanners. A few of the benefits to VueScan are that it’s small—less than 3 MB on your system—and it installs without spewing all kinds of files all over your hard drive. Also, the options for pre-scan tweakinng are myriad, offering more precise control of your output. Granted, it won’t do stuff like "One-Button-Scan-to-Email", but if you’re using Photoshop, you should be savvy enough to work out an efficient workflow for that on your own. Truly, MUCH better, but leaps and bounds, than Epson’s SmartPanel BloatWare.

Cool thing about VueScan’s Professional editions: Unlimited FREE upgrades for LIFE!

Then maybe he could answer my other question I just submitted today regarding Photoshop 7.0.1 not finding Epson Twain5, instead it says I am looking for a camera and bombs out because I do not have a camera attached.
If I use Image Ready, it works fine and selects Epson Twain5. Why does Photoshop do that??

I already have the latest Twain 5.5 and remember I said it works for one and not the other and Image Ready is part of Photoshop, does not have its own file. That is what is confusing.

windows is very complex. my (edumakated) GUESS is that there’s a reg key messed up some where that’s correct for IR but wrong for PS. uninstall and reinstall should clear it up. (and are you SURE you have the latest? when did you check?)
