I would like to use the calculations window to do some photo conversions. To streamline my workload, I want to turn this into an action. However, when I made the action, and then ran it on a second photo, it was looking for the first image since that is what I used to create the action. Is there any other way to create an action using calculations without it searching for the original photo?

Try this…
* Delete the recorded Make command from your action.
* From the Actions palette menu choose Insert Menu Item
* From the Image menu, choose Calculations, then click OK to close the dialog. Note a new Sekect Calculations command is "inserted" (not "recorded") — generic: No file names specified.

Now when you play your action, the image options in the Source 1, Source 2 dropdown menus will be the files open "at the moment," not the ones used if you "record" this command.

Does this help?
