Can anyone tell me if they have experienced the creation of residual "background files" as a result of using Photoshop, ImageReady, Illustrator or PageMaker? I’ve been using Photoshop & ImageReady to create JPEGs and GIFs for our website. Our Information Officer said that my software is creating a bunch of "background files" that are taking up space on the server. I was not aware of this phenomenon. I can not tell you what type of files he is talking about. Is this true? Is this something I should be aware of, and what can I do about it? Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

probably the scratch file. are you closing down photoshop before shutting down the computer? it might be "orphaning" the temp files wherever you have them…

that said you should definately make sure you’re NOT saving your scratch file to a network share (menu item: edit> prefrences> plug-ins & scratch disks). it should be on a local hard drive or it will be DOG DOG slow. and having the scratch file on a share might also in itself be the cause of orphaning it. there might be some miscommunication with the network sw and photoshop where the net sw never gets the message to delete the file if ps closes. for best results put it on a local hard drive, c:\ if you only have one disk, d:\ (or what ever drive you DON’T have the windows swapfile on) if you have more than one disk. (my guess is, corporate pc=1 hard drive).

hope something in that ramble helps 🙂
