Dominant indeed. Dominate? hehe. Actually, I think predominant is the word I really meant to use.

Right…so let’s say I have a photo of a kid wearing a red jacket, holding a red balloon in front of a fire truck. The predominant color would be red. If some software could detect that and assign "red" as a keyword to either a metafile or add red to the file name, then I could search for that photo by color. I’d like this functionality for a stock photo database. Any ideas?

You have to make a PS-action, to do a batch job.
Advice: Never trust on automatic corrections for 100%.
DCE tools does a good job. But I think your automatic results (even if complete neutral) are not always the best or better results. I for myself wouldn’t do colour correction without my eyes controlling it.

In PS "autolevels" does the same job (with a worse parameter I think) I Correct professional gives a good white balance. That’s not the same as no-colour cast. But probably more what you have in mind for the results.

So your question isn’t that easy at all to solve.

I haven’t seen such a thing, but it doesn’t seem too hard.

If you want to reduce to keywords, first you need a list of keywords and the associated RGB values. How many shades do you want to recognize? I would start by sitting down with a bunch of images and categorize them by hand, see
what keywords come to mind, try to use the fewest keywords possible.

Once you have a set of keywords and values, save the
values to a palette. For each image: load it, resize it small and blur, convert to indexed using the saved palette, and count the pixels for each palette entry.

I would categorize by the top two or three colors – say, any color that takes up more than 25% or the image – and
might also consider some sort of hierarchical scheme; if you have 30% mediumblue versus 15% lightred, 15% mediumred, and 15% darkred, is the image more blue or more red?

Hugh’s advice seems pretty good to me. Once you have come up with some specific rules along the lines of the last paragraph, you could hire someone to write a Photoshop script to do the batch processing.
