As a result of a faulty application (Nikon Capture NX) I may be obliged to format my hard drive and reinstall PS CS2. What files and folders are to be copies to transfer the plug-ins, actions and preferences from the current installation to the new one?

P.S. For those interested, the NX problem is well known and documented as the ".Net issue" and effects a small number of computers requiring formatting the hard drive in order for NX to function.

This from Googling the issue:

After reading various forums and getting some input from Nikon support, I decided to look into my Microsoft .NET framework installation.

I removed all of my NET 1.1 and 1.1 patch installs.

Then I installed .NET Framework 2.0 off Microsoft’s website. When I tried to install Capture NX I was prompted to install .NET 1.1

After that I received an error from Capture NX similar to my original problem. I then removed NET 1.1 (leaving 2.0 still) and everything now seems to run fine.

Hopefully someone else experiencing a similar problem will find this cure useful.

Reformatting your hard drive should not be necessary for a problem like this. Remove NX and all traces of it from windows and the registry. Remove your NET installation and try the above, if you have not already, prior to the drastic step of reformatting and reinstalling everything.

I am actually beginning to prefer NX for intial raw processing over the Adobe converter. However it is nearly impossible to use both simultaneously with less than 2gbs ram.

Hi Norman,

Assuming a default installation, otherwise substituting your actual PS CS2 path for C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2,

Preferences Path:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\9.0\Adobe Photoshop CS2 Settings

Plug-ins Path:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Plug-ins

Actions Path:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Presets\Photoshop Actions

However, in the event you’ve modified your workspace, menus, etc., I suggest you fully copy the Presets folder and not the Photoshop Actions folder. Note too that if you have installed 3rd-party plug-ins into the Photoshop CS2 Plug-ins directory, you might not have to reinstall them again, but some may still require reinstallation so as to save the serialization info to the Windows registry.

Also, from within PS CS2, run Help > Transfer Activation before you reformat your hard drive or if you can’t launch PS CS2, then run the uninstaller to access the Transfer Activation option. This will preserve your ability to activate PS CS2 when reinstalling. But, so long as the activation hash in the hidden sector of the hard drive isn’t corrupted, then you can also attempt to preserve your activation status by copying the Product License folder, C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe Systems\Product licenses, and then restore it to the same location before you reinstall PS CS2 again. Of course, you’ll still be reinstalling PS CS2 on the reformatted drive, so it really would be easier just to activate it again. I still think it is prudent to save the Product License folder "just in case".

Regards,

Daryl

Thank you. Precisely the information I sought.
