I have photoshop V12 running happily on a fairly new Dell Inspiron. This week I connected this pc to my network, since then, Photoshop will not start up, it tries but sits there with the egg timer and refuses to start. If I disable the network, it starts OK!

It has me baffled (I have tried another network card without success) and there are no IP clashes on the nework.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Stuart

I have photoshop V12

That’d be a trick. Current version is 9.02

What’s an egg timer?

Does it straighten out after you disconnect?

Now that’s spooky. I’ve just finished watching "Back to the Future 3" 🙂

Stuart,

Do you have a funky ergonomic keyboard with the keys in new positions?…I keep trying to mistakenly type V12 for CS2, and nearly can, but doing it twice seems unlikely. Perhaps you’re accustomed to Illustrator 11 (i.e., Illustrator CS) and thought if Illustrator 12 is CS2, then Photoshop CS2 must be version 12? Nope. PC CS2 = PS 9.

Tony, I’m sure Stuart’s "egg timer" is just the hourglass that appears in lieu of the cursor when waiting on a process to finish.

In any case Stuart, I don’t know what would cause PS CS2 to not open if the host PC is on a network. I’ve never had a problem, but I think I’ve also got the feature disabled for PS CS2 to check for any updates. I suggest that while you’ve got it up and running without a network connection, you try launching the Updater from the Help menu, let that task complete so you’re presented with the dialog where you can select Preferences, and change them to disable checking for updates. Then, close out of the dialogs, shut down PS CS2, reconnect your network, and then see if PS CS2 will launch.

I’ve no reason to expect that to solve the problem, but since an update check might poll any connected network during the launch of PS CS2, maybe it is a factor to eliminate at the very least.

I’ve also seen issues related to editing networked files, but I think that is usually more just related to slow performance, for obvious reasons. Still, if you’ve done any editing of a networked file, I’m not sure if having it in your recent file history could cause PS CS2 to attempt to locate the file when being launched, but you might want to try clearing out the recent file list as well. I don’t know how to do that unless a reset of your preferences does so, or just open and close however many local files will fill the Open Recent list.

What?? Bob, are you saying that if a default printer doesn’t exist, then Photoshop will not open? I’ve always had a printer and thus never seen such behavior if true, but am just looking for what prompted you to ask about a printer.

Thanks,

Daryl

Not having access to a default printer CAN cause problems. Like many other things it’s hit or miss, but is certainly something to check in a case like this.

I can’t say I’m surprised…I remember being so puzzled once by the absence of fonts available to me on a PC that I knew had a bucketload of fonts installed. When the later "installation" of a generic printer for printing to FILE was performed, the font menus became populated and so I learned of the connection. This must be some strange quirk of Windows.

If I recall correctly Daryl, there was a similiar issue posted in the Knowledge Base under Version 7 that indicated a network printer as a default printer could cause problems.

In trying to find the article (which I didn’t), I came across this, which may help the OP.

I bet it has something to do with the fact you are using a version of Photoshop that doesn’t exist. The current version is 9.02. There is no version 12. So that is your problem.

I think the problem with the printer is not the fact that there isn’t one, but that there is one configured in the O/S, that’s simply not found.

Of course PS can fire up with no printer attached. It does so on my laptop.

Hi Robert

I was having a ‘senior moment’ when I wrote the details. It is in fact Version 7.1! the stupid thing is, that it we have other pc.s on the network using V7.1 quite happily. It has been working OK on this particular PC for the last 6 months, it was only when I connected it to the network that it refused to start. Disable the network and it is OK!.

Many thanks for coming back to me, sorry for the incorrect info.
