just saved a photo by accident and it overwrote the old file of course any way to recover old photo

We have all been there and done that, it is part of the learning curve. You have learned a valuable lesson and therefore never do this again. One sure way to prevent it happening again would be to make your original file "read only", right click on the thumbnail in Windows Explorer, select Properties >General and tick read only.

Besides Mike’s suggestion to make images read-only, there’s another procedure you can use. I’m in the habit of immediately using "Save as… " to resave a file under edit as soon as I open it. I add a suffix "-edit1" to the filename. Besides preventing the kind of loss you are talking about, as I occasionally save intermediate stages of an edit I have a sequential number to tell me which is which. When finished, if the intermediate edits are no longer needed you can just delete them. Better temporary redundancy than irrevocable loss of the original (or of a previous editing stage to which you would like to revert).
