Recently, when starting up Photoshop CS (with all the current updates), I get a message that the startup failed because MSVCRT10.dll wasn’t found.

In order to resolve this problem, I uninstalled Photoshop 7 which was on my computer. Next, I did a repair installation of PS CS. This didn’t solve the problem.

I looked at my plug-ins for foreign plugins and found "nik Color Efex". It’s been on my system for a while without problem. Just to be safe, nik Color Efex was upgraded to the latest version. This also did not resolve the problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks;

Stan

Do you PS CS pointing to earlier versions of PS for plugins?

I’m not certain. Initially, I was running PS 7. Then, last November, I upgraded to PS CS – I didn’t have any problems with plugins even though PS 7 was also installed.

Earlier this year, I bought a Wacom tablet and it came with nik Color Efex plugin. The plugin didn’t cause any problems.

However, recently PS wanted to upgraded itself. It was after the upgrade that I noticed the problem. I’m not sure that the upgrade caused the problem. Because so many have PS CS, an upgrade problem would have been addressed by Adobe.

I’m ready to think of uninstalling PS CS, rebooting and installing PS CS again.

Hi Stan,

Upon building a new PC and installing all my software, inclusive of PS CS2, I too encountered the MSVCRT10.DLL file not found error when launching PS. I do have several plug-ins that I did not reinstall but simply transferred from the system this one replaces, so I suspect one of those is the culprit. Rather than reinstall them all or try to troubleshoot the single plug-in that was needed the file, I simply installed MSVCRT10.DLL to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 and my problems were solved. No need to uninstall/reinstall PS CS…if you’ve got another PC you might look to see if you’ve got MSVCRT10.DLL on it. Or, you can also just grab it from DLL-files.com, which is a good source when you can’t find a missing DLL. Here’s a link: <http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/pop.php?msvcrt10>

Thanks, Daryl. Your suggestion worked like a charm. I wonder why Adobe doesn’t make your suggestion on it’s knowledge base for those who have the same problem.

Glad that took care of the problem Stan. The existing knowlegebase article addressing msvcrt10.dll does seem rather poor to me, perhaps that being because it is discussed in conjuction with other startup errors and a "reinstall" solution being offered up. Unless a PS installation actually does install msvcrt10.dll then such a suggested solution is useless. They do address plug-in conflicts across PS versions though, which is valid. Why they don’t include a suggestion to simply install msvcrt10.dll, I’m not sure, unless it is because they don’t make a practice of encouraging downloads of files from websites outside their realm of control. These days, Google is my first "knowledgebase" I go to for troubleshooting a problem, followed by those offer by the software/hardware vendors, and that is how I found msvcrt10.dll.
