Seriously I’m stuck eh!!

I can’t figure out the right cel-shading style to use on this program! …..

Yes, I draw with this, not illustator… (I HATE illustrator.. shifting the lines I draw…)

….. Oh and uh… I’m only about 13 so.. Take it easy with any crits!!! ^_^

Example of what I do with photoshop (make sure to check the comment I wrote!! It’ll say if I used something other than that!!) one this site: tali-espeon.deviantart.com

That site doesn’t show cel style shading, it shows "kid with a magic marker" style drawing.

If you search the deviant art site, it has a LOT of tutorials on shading, in various styles, in Photoshop and other applications.

I just did a search there for "tutorial cel" and got a bunch of good hits.

And if you’re going to stay in art, you need to learn how to accept criticism.

You can do any style in Photoshop.
YOU have to decide what it is you want to achieve.

And you need a lot of practice to make any of them look good.

First off, I would say to always work on improving your drawing skills. The better the base illustration, the better the final work will be.

Drawing tablets are good, but I still hand draw most of my illustrations, scan them in and colour in Photoshop.

Here’s a nice little tutorial for comic book style colouring (there are plenty of artists who have tutorials on their websites).

I have a hard time with choices..

Natasha:

Like life, art IS choice

The choice to use colour (or not)
The choice to use paper or a computer or something else
The choice of subject matter
etc…

Learn to choose and realize, in the end many choice don’t matter that much while others are life changing.

Here are things to do to improve your work:

1) Observe reality, art is a reflection of reality so you need to really look at it and _see_ it. One interesting exercise I was given once was to list 20 things I could preceive about a candle. Try it.

2) Take the time it takes to make good art. Some few times, this can be done in only a few minutes or hours, mostly you can work days and weeks on a single piece before it is finished (especially on the computer).

3) Observe reality: it is a source of inspiration

4) Avoid doing derivative artwork exclusively. People who only do star trek portraits or their favourite mang/anime characters never evolve as artists and usually suck.

4) Study art you like to find out what makes it tick

5) Study art you don’t like for the same reason

6) Avoid criticism from you parents, it will suck ’cause everything you do will be nice and good in their eyes. Get crit from strangers. Chris may have been harsh in your eyes, but click on his name to find out who he is adn you’ll realize this guy probably sees the best stuff ever made in Photoshop and some of the people around here probably worked on it. You have just landed in one of the biggest ponds ever where it comes to using PS.

7) Did I already mention observe reality?

Hey, Natasha–

I was drawing like a maniac at your age. Keep up the good work!

Illustrator is a vector-based program meaning you’ll have no "jaggies," just smooth straight lines. Also, it will allow you to resize your work to any dimension at all. Do NOT give up on it.

The reason your lines keep shifting is this: there’s a menu under the pencil tool and Illustrator’s default action is to keep lines selected. Click twice on the pencil tool and you’ll get to this menu. Unchecking that "Keep Selected" box was the very first thing that I did. Leave the other two selected, that way you’ll be able to edit them at your leisure without going back to the dropdown menu. Play with smoothness and fidelity to see what you like best. I have mine set at 2 pixels for Fidelity and 20% for Smoothness.

Also, make sure you’ve got your fill option set to nothing. It took me the LONGEST time to realize that, wow, I can, like, draw my shape AND color it at the same time! But even now, I take a more traditional approach and "ink" separately.

I’ve gotten to the point where I can draw with the tablet but I *trace* with the tablet alot more effectively, which means, of course, I draw on paper first and scan it.

As my colleagues have already said, study stuff you like and stuff that you don’t. Both have lessons to teach. Do not get discouraged. You know in your heart what to do. It’s a big world out there and there’s ALOT to learn. It’s good that you’ve discovered your passion early because that means it’ll only improve with time. You have a strong natural ability. Thanks for coming to us with your question.

Hey Natasha

You might not know it, but Chris Cox, who gave you your first critical review in the forum, is one of the guys who created Photoshop. Look at the About Photoshop item under the help menu. His name is on the list of people that comes up.

Maybe is will seem more cool to know your work was looked at by someone (sorta) famous.

Keep on drawing. Maybe one day you will be an expert like some of the others in here.

^^;

Not quite what I meant by trouble with choices. What I meant was that if I like 2 things equally, I have a hard time choosing between them. ^^;

Meh.. After my last soft cel-shading I’ve decided to stick with hard anyways. ^^;

Just to tell you but; Most things I draw are either entirely original, or inspired by manga’s I read.

Also, I HAVE been drawing realistic stuff (ick..) Just I haven’t found it.. I handed it in to my art teacher.. O_O; It’s been there for 2 months… TT_TT;;

"pokes tablet* COME BACK!!! (It died again)"

OK, that’s not a good thing.

If you’re going to draw and color on the computer, you need a good, reliable tablet.

What type of tablet are you using right now (brand and model)? Have you checked for updated drivers for that tablet?

I honestly think its the computer…

I can’t wait untill I can connect it to this one. ^_^ (This one has FLASH!! *eyes shine* )

And the other one is slower… That might just be part of it… <.<;;

Hi Natasha,

Yes I am. XD Oldest, 13, just started high school.<<

I remember you being born, back in the old days of the Adobe Compuserve forums!

Gang, in case you don’t know, Natasha’s dad is a forum host here, (who at one time appeared to be attempting to be on a one-man crusade to re-populate Canada <g>).

Jim looks after Photoshop Album and is sometimes found helping out on the German Forums.
