I’m trying to learn Photoshop. I’ve downloaded 8.0 and would like to create name plate like they did here:
http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/howto/story/0,24330,36208 07,00.html

I choose file/new, 3 X 4 inch, 100 res, 16 bit, background white

Using the Paint Bucket,I filled the image with blue.
The next step is: Apply the Texturizer filter (Filter > Texture > Texturizer). Select the Sandstone Texture.
When I try this "Texture" is grayed out. The only menus not grayed are Blurred Noise Sharpen Stylize and Other.
What I’m doing wrong?

Works in 8 bit mode, but not 16 bit mode, so just do Image > Mode > 8 bits/channel to apply the filter.

A lot of the filters were acquired piece-meal over the years when Adobe bought them from smaller companies and while CS has a great deal of additional 16 bit support for key things like layers and adjustment layers they haven’t re-written all these old filters for 16 bit mode.

Using the Paint Bucket,I filled the image with blue.

As a side note: The Paint Bucket **IS NOT** a fill tool in Photoshop the way it is in some other programs. Using the Paint bucket is not the appropriate way to fill an image. Get out of the habit of using the Paint Bucket like a fill tool.

It works on an all-white image, but it is not doing what you believe it is doing. it does not make a whole image fill with color.

The Paint Bucket is a combination of the Fill command and the Magic Wand tool. When you click on the image, it looks that the color of the pixel you clicked on. Then it goes outward, filling in color as it goes, until it hits a pizel of a different color.

Because your image is all white, it fills the whole image with blue, so you believe it’s a tool used to fill an image with color. If your image was not all white, though, you would get a differnt result.

If your intention is to fill an image or fill a selection with color, do not use the Paint Bucket. Instead, it’s far, far simpler: You hold down the Alt key n your keyboard, then press the Backspace key. That’s it!
