I am working in an extremely old version (5.0) of Photoshop and was wondering how to create a beveled edge on an object that is destined to become a button on the web. I’m also going to post this in the Illustrator forum.

Things I’ve tried include:
1) making my file size exactly my button size – 72px wide x 25 px high. Any layer > effect I try doesn’t take. Then I tried…
2) increasing the canvas size to approx. double the above dimensions. I was able to then see an effect, but it appeared to be a drop shadow, not a bevel.
3) I’ve also played with all the different modes and colors, but nothing seems to work.

Thanks!
Kirsten

There weren’t too many bevel effects in version 5.0. I think it can be done with the lighting effects filter, but it is not a simple process. Try seaching for tutorials on that filter.

(Or download the trial and create a few buttons for bases, and save them without text … use them in version 5 to add the text after the trial expires).

If you’re not going to upgrade to a new version of Photoshop, I’d like to suggest Flaming Pear’s SuperBladePro plugin:
