Change your photo from RGB to Greyscale (you can always put it back to make RGB additions on a greyscale background)
Then Filter > Grain if you want the 35mm effect

Change your photo from RGB to Greyscale

That is the simplest method but also the worst method for creating the right tones in a "black and white" image.

Do a web search for tutorials – there are too many for me to mention here.

I agree. And just adding noise doesn’t resemble the characteristics of film.

The simplest method (for grain) is: add a new layer, fill it with 127 grey, add noise, set blending mode to Overlay.

The plugin Site has "B/W styler". You might test that:

First, allow me to say that I am a photographer, and have worked extensively with B&W emulsions for more than 35 years. Convert to B&W Pro has been one of the best plug-ins I’ve run across, and while I usually do my own conversions in PS, the ease of use and the capability of this program impressed me.

As for converting to greyscale, I agree that it’s a poor way to convert to B&W. There are several plug-ins and programs that do a much better job, and, of course, you can always use a myriad of techniques in Photoshop as well.

Yes, and then when your done instead of having an image with thousands of hundreds of thousands of shades of gray you have one with 256 shades of gray. That is like converting a color image to a 256 color .gif image.

If you don’t want to do the conversion right then at least do the lame brain lazy way in a civilized manner. Go to Image > Adjustments > Desaturate. At least this way when you done and have a poor grayscale image you didn’t through away 80% of the image information doing it.
