Hi,

If I have a tif file open in Photoshop and it’s resolution is 300ppi and it’s image size is 1000 pixels in width and 700 pixels in height. If I change the the pixels to half the size 500 x 350, but kept the 300 ppi resolution, and Place the .psd file into Illustrator, will the print quality of the image differ? (by changing the pixel dimensions?

thanks

Well, when you do that you are throwing away 75% of the image data, so,yeah.

Anna,

The pixel dimensions say how much data (detail) is in the image, while the ppi tells how close together a print device must print the pixels.

Anna,

When you place in Illustrator you will have an image 1/2 the size after re-sizing.

Provided that’s what you want – that is you aren’t going to then re-size the image in Illustrator – then the quality should be fine.

However if having placed your image in Illustrator you then resize to the original dimensions you will end up printing the image at only 150ppi and you will notice a decrease in quality.
