I’m new to Photoshop and just purchased 7.0 (I have WindowsXP). I was playing around with the IMAGE/ADJUSTMENTS/REPLACE COLOR feature and lo and behold I ended up with a great effect to my photo of Alaska. Don’t ask me how I did it but by using the ink dropper tool and clicking around I was able to save a neat photo. Now I am unable to re-create or even get it to work for me at all, except in the replace color box area. I’m able to adjust/change the image in the "Replace Color Box" but I am not able to work on the actual image like I did the other day. Does that make sense? I have no idea what I am doing and just got lucky I guess but I was able to make changes to my photo in both the "Replace Color Box" and also on the main photo itself.
I am so frustrated and near tears. I’ve worked in Adobe Photo Deluxe 4.0 with no problem but am completely ignorant when it comes to Photoshop 7.0.

You can see my photo "Camping along Kachemak Bay" at www.dylewarren.com

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Dyle,

You’ll have to learn to know what you’re doing, and, at least in the beginning note what you do, so you can reproduce your steps.

following curiosity you had Photoshop take you by the hand, and lead you to wherever the programme brought you. It should be the other way around.

I learned to previsualise what I want, and then get there at all cost, making mental notes of unexpected, but interesting effects.

PS is a tool that helps to get where we want.

Try to retrace your steps. Probably, when left with a choice, you’ll take the same route, and get the effect back. But make notes as you go. you need to make it reproducible.

Hope this helps,
Rob

Could it be that, first time around, you applied Replace Color with the background layer selected, and now you are trying to repeat the procedure with some other layer selected?

I’m new to Photoshop and just purchased 7.0

Don’t wish to cast a shadow on your enthusiasm but to have "just purchased" PS7, you either travelled back through time or you bought it "second hand".

Assuming the latter, make sure you get a "transfer of license" form (available from Adobe) signed by the vendor. Then register your ownership with Adobe.

Without this form your copy of Photoshop is illegal; you will not be able to get any support from Adobe; nor will you be able to upgrade to the latest version. Without registering, I doubt you’ll even be able to download the PS 7.0.1 upgrade (which is pretty much essential)

Should the vendor be unwilling to provide this form, it will be because they have sold you a pirated copy and you should insist on a refund.

Thanks guys but I’m sure I didn’t make myself clear. I can’t replicate my photo but that isn’t my main concern as I could play with it until I get it right. I just can’t work on my image in the main/center box/window like I did before and I don’t know what I need to "click on" to do so. Guys how you get your "main or center image/photo" to change for you? Of course I don’t know what I’m doing but if I could get started I can play around with the photo until I get it like I want. Only I can’t even get started! I mean the stupid instructions say to change the hues/saturation, etc. any idiot can see that you can change/alter your image that way. I just need to know what tool, background, or something else that I am omitting. Changing the image in the replace box I click ok and it just saves my change until I go back to it. The image in the center/main window does not change at all.
What step do I need to take to be able to change my image in the main box?

When I first played around I didn’t know what I was doing so I was just circling the ink tool/mouse back and forth from the image in the replace box and back to the main image and sometimes over to the foreground/background area on the left. I was frustrated because here I have a $300 plus software and I don’t even know how to begin! For instance, I want to put a simple black frame around my photo and the 4-cd’s (12 hrs worth) they do not show the completed steps. He showed placing cards/layering on top of one another but not the completed step as to placing it over your image (not hiding it) and saving it to file, etc.

If you could just tell me what I need to click on to get my image/photo in the main box to change I can play around with the colors, etc. I am leaving out a step or something.

What do I do to get my image in the center window to change while in the replace color mode?

I must be leaving out a step or two…..

Thanks for the info Chris but when I was in the market for Photoshop I didn’t want all the bells and whistles that come with CS2. I will be using my version stickly for working on photo images. When I bought this 7.0 everything was new/unopened/unregistered.
I believe, but I can be mistaken, that I downloaded the 7.01 with it, is it possible it was all in one?
Anyway, I have yet to register but intend to do so. I bought it on eBay (shame, shame) but the guy who sold it had never opened it as he purchased CS2 instead…he had great feedback too and wasn’t from Hong Kong(hee, hee)!

p.s.
I’ve already rec’vd two compliments on my photo in the photo club I belong to. This gives one encouragement to move on.

If you want to take a peak (third photo from left)…..

I dont mean to be critical of your tent shot, but you have some serious horizon level problems in that shot and the water is running downhill. perhaps try cropping it level and it will be less disconcerting to more experienced viewers. just a suggestion meant to be helpful.

Thanks Donald, for a minute I thought maybe I wasn’t holding my camera straight. The photo was taken on Homer Spit, just like a barbeque spit it is a straight narrow pennisula that stretches out into Cook Inlet and the Bay, etc.
Are all horizons perfectly horizontal? Why is it that the ground/terra firma beneath the tent is straight? My photo wasn’t cropped or anything.

Are all horizons perfectly horizontal?

When they are water they are – otherwise we’d all be in trouble!!

everything was new/unopened/unregistered. I believe that I downloaded the 7.01 with it, is it possible it was all on one CD?

Glad you got a bargain. Get it registered so you’ll be eligible for upgrades at the reduced price.

7.0.1 will not have been on the CD. You’ll need to download it (link at the top of this page) It is pretty much an essential update – especially if your images are to be opened in future versions.

Chris.

Chris,

Later versions for PS 7 already had the 7.0.1 patch applied.

The earth is losing gravity as some scientists are stating and I believe my photo is a prime example! 🙁

One other theory of this crooked horizon is that some of the mountains in the background on one side of the photo are closer than the mountains on the otherside. Thus, the "appearance" of a crooked horizon!

I’m going to frame it and hang it on the wall crooked to compensate for this major photographical error! 🙂

I think the only theory at play here is no tripod or bubble level. looks like a great locale . here is my edited version.

I’m glad you called attention to a very important detail, not one that I normally foul up. Thanks for the re-do and critique Donald, much appreciated!

There are two other possible "excuses"for it. One is that my friend reminded me I took this picture from the car and the other is that the photographer who took this is "ancient" and too old to be taking pictures in the first place!:)

Has anyone out there any answers to my first question regarding the replace color option?

Yes, I think the outer sheet of the tent is a bit too loose. Should high winds prevail (either inside or outside of the tent 8) ) then it is likely that the outer will flap.

This can be annoying. In some circumstances it can be dangerous as a ripped outer in adverse conditions may afford very little shelter.

For the PS thing you did, in my opinion, two outstanding bits of work:

a – explored the features

b – discovered the power and intelligence of this forum.

None of the above are great without continuing to explore and be amazed at what digital images and a good program can do.

Dyle,i wasnt trying to overly picky, but the level thing will stand out in a competition if thats your goal with it. i wish i had your email as i played with two others from your gallery, but dont post it here,as it may get unwanted spam. do you have an accessible email?
