This is probably harder to explain than do, say I have a layer with an active mask and I want to delete the image and past another image into the layer so I can use the mask. Sometimes it works and then not. I am creating a jigsaw puzzle template, about 40 pieces (layers) the first 20 seem to work and then not. God, you can see I’m a great communicator too!

Thanks Eric (and Dave), but it is possible to paste into the old layer if you delete the original image first, I successfully did that on the first 20 layers, it just isn’t consistant. Yes I could paste the mask back on but that is really slow and there’s a limit to the number of aplha-channels, 25? I’ve managed to do this before but maybe with fewer layers.

steve, there is a discussion about doing th eopposite, that is, pasting a mask on another layer: Pierre Courtejoie "Any way to copy a mask from one layer to another" 8/12/03 1:00am </cgi-bin/webx?50/13>

I don’t recall what is the current layer masks limit… but you could use vector masks as well, maybe?
and/or use the clipping group function.
