Hi people,

I have been commisioned to produce a poster advertisement for a design/fashion orientated clothes shop, the dimensions will be 6 x 3 foot, just wondering if anyone had any tips for designing for this type of industry and at this type of size.

I have not designed anything close to this size before and I am starting to run into a few types of problems:

1. How the hell do I make make my images look less pixelated at this size, I have shot the photos at the highest res. my digital camera will allow (2048 x 1536) but it still looks pretty bad against a large canvas.

2. Should I limit my artwork (in detail) considering that its a shop window display poster?

3. I am competent in Illustrator as well as Photoshop, with it being a large format poster, would it be best to produce something in Illustrator so that I can resize it, whilst retaining smooth edges?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Lee,

Using Illustrator where possible would be a good idea, and keep any raster elements relatively small. A poster that size will not be viewed from 10 inches <g>…so you should be able to get away with 100 – 125 ppi for any raster elements, which would give you a raster image of about 18" x 9" from that camera with no interpolation.

CF,

Is there a good ration of DPI to Focal Point? <<

No, not really, but go and have a close look at any billboard. You will be surprised at just how low-rez they are….

Lee,

I would also think it would be prudent of you to talk to the printer that will be producing the actual poster. Perhaps their process would require a certain "end-product" format for your file.

Sorry r_harvey… I work on both platforms and respect the views of both, I know people don’t like double posting so i’ll not do it in future 🙂

Enlargement tip: Create an action that will enlarge the image by 10% at a time. Enlarging in small increments like this yields superior results to enlarging to the finished size once.
