Has anybody seen and tried the Gateway Tablet PC? Does it work like a Cintique or is it a "poor cousin"?
A tablet PC is basically a laptop with a Wacom digitizer behind the screen. I have read that a cintique is essentially just a monitor with a Wacom digitizer behind the screen.
The differences show up in the drivers. Unfortunately the drivers for the tablet PC digitizers doesn’t seem to have the same features and flexibility as the Centrique. Tablet PCs are mainly for getting work done and taking handwritten notes on the screen. While it can be set to be "pressure sensitive" I have read a few complaints and I just turned it off because I don’t really need if for my daily use.
Go to Microsoft’s web site and look up Tablet PC for more info. Gateway is just one company that makes Tablet PC’s. The spec is designed by Microsoft and Tablet PC’s come with a special version of Windows XP that also includes software for writing on the screen and recognizing handwriting.
P.S. No, you cannot connect a tablet PC to a regular PC and use the Tablet as a Centrique like digitizer. There have been threads about it in microsoft.public.windows.tabletpc but they never come up with anything.
