Is it significantly easier to use the pen tool to make selections with the wacom tablet?

If you mean when using the lasso, personally speaking, I would say definitely Yes. Even more so when using the Pen tool.

Whether you would find discernible additional ease of use with other selection tools is open to debate. I don’t have a mouse connected to my machines (and never use the Wacom mouse). The Pen is my only pointing method.

Of course, ease-of-use is dependent upon whether you’re comfortable using the pen tool for creating paths in the first place.

just mean is it simply better and more precise to use the wacom tablet. that’s what people seem to say…

I need to use the pen tool to get precise selections, and I can do it with the mouse, i just want to know it’s easier with the tablet??

It is far better and easier than using a mouse – by an order of magnitude. I bought the 4×5" Wacom graphire tablet from Adorama or Amazon few months ago and when I’m editing photos that’s the only thing I use. Some people say the 4×5 is too small, but I find it exactly fitting with the size of my hand, movement of my wrist etc. so it is very comfortable for me. If I was doing a lot of drawing with it (graphic art stuff) I would probably go for a bigger tablet, but for photowork the 4×5 fits me perfectly:) When I’m not using it I slide it under my monitor stand and it’s out of the way.

In general: yes (in my opinion)

It also depends upon the selection techniques being used and for general fine-tuning that a pen and tablet combination affords.

I prefer to keep the wacon for the Mac as it also provides a mouse with 4 button stuff similar to mouse on PC.

For the PC any generic 1028 pen and tablet device seems cool.

The important thing for pixel painting seems to be wise use of pen & brush settings to get the most out of the hardware available.

This is just a guess, but he probably uses the Scrollbars along the edges of windows 😉

Well, I manage quite well with a pen/tablet and the "PageUp" and PageDown" keys, and the occasional use of a scroll bar. There isn’t even a mouse attached to my system. 🙂

Funnily enough, my computer time isn’t all computer graphics (where I too hardly ever use a mouse). I do a lot of reading and research and the scroll wheel is a godsend there.
