I know many great features in photoshop such as the image filters, it has advance group functions, the path tool, good layer support I can define my own brush. I have learned a lot but how the freaking hell do I draw a line in Adobe Photoshop CS? it was not problem in previous photoshop. I have to use paint if I want to draw lines, I know I can draw straight lines by holding down the shift key, I can draw circles by using the circle tool, elipses…. or advances curvy shapes! But the freaking line tool draws me a freaking arrow, so I have to draw the freaking lines in paint if I want lines that are not vertical or horizontal, save as BMP and open my picture in photoshop and draw everything else!

Calm down a second, and consider that what you want to do is certainly possible, and easy. You’ve simply missed it.

It’s apparent that you have found the "Line Tool" available as part of the "Custom Shapes" set of tools in the Toolbox. I know this because you’re complaining that it draws a "freaking arrow."

Have a look at the Options Bar for attributes available for the line and which can be user-customized. From the little menu encircled in the screenshot you can toggle the inclusion of arrowheads when you drag out a line, and you can tailor the shape of the arrowheads.

Also, you might want to explore how the 3 buttons grouped on the left side of the Options Bar will affect how the line is drawn into your document.

Deke McClelland’s Photoshop 4 Bible spent a year on my beside table after it came out. It spent almost as much time in the bathroom as I did, and had a better attendance record at work than me.

Well, thank you… it still doesn’t make sense to me why the arrowhead was on by default though. Now I don’t have to use paint to draw lines anymore 🙂

I’m thankful for others who don’t care to read HTML/PDF Help manuals. Thanks for the answer.

But I don’t understand why the minimum line size is .01" – I know it was smaller with past versions.

I’m using 7.0

Thanks, Steve Bandy

In CS2 it is 0.014 in or 1 pixel

Maybe it’s Resolution dependant?

I don’t think it is a default. It certainly wasn’t when I installed CS. But it, like most other features in PS is sticky … once you set it you have it until you remove it, even if you close the program and restart. (You can simply turn it off, and then it will go away until you use it again.)

The actual minimum weight is 1 pixel. What this is in inches depends on the image resolution.

OO, yes it is, I tried installing on my second comp… because I thought I screwed some setting, and it did draw arrows there to thus my despair and this post 🙂

Heh! Just shows how little freaking use we photographers have for freaking line tools and pen tools!

Like I said, John, The pantomime season is upon us. 🙂

I agree – it’s NOT a default.
