I’ve seen some used copies of Photoshop appear on eBay. Do they really work if they’re used?

As long as the previous owner took care of it. Changed the oil regularly and didn’t drive the mouse too fast.

sorry

It’s hard (impossible?) to tell.
They may be legitimate copies where a user removed the program from his own computer, installed a newer version and is legally selling his original copy..OR, more likely it is a pirated (unauthorized copy) of a disk that is presently in operation on someone else’s computer. Bob Williams

Software does not wear out…..

If they are pirated copies, then you’ll have to let your conscience guide you.

I wonder if and how ebay responds to piracy complaints.

If the program was loaded from CDROM too often, certain bits might be worn. Worn bits cause often-used plugins to slip and not engage properly, thus the famous ‘Assertion Error’, particularly in Save for Web. These failures cause bit particles (nibbles) to collect at the bottom of memory and build up as virtual sludge. If you persist in using the program regardless, the word boundaries will fail and the smoke will get out of the machine, causing complete failure.

Selling CD-R copies of software is against the policy rules of EBay. If it appears to be copies, contact EBay.
http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/unauthorized-copies.html If the Photoshop is a original disk of the used software, have them sign a transfer of license for the Adobe http://www.adobe.com/support/pdfs/cstofo.pdf Short of this, I think I would pass on their product.

If he upgraded, the old version can not be sold.

I would buy, pay using PayPal (consumer protection), and if it fails registering with Adobe, report the seller to Adobe + eBay.

I bought my Photoshop 7 from ebay after I was sure the seller was aware of the need to transfer license and did the proper paperwork. The installation required me to call Adobe because it was a version 3 with an upgrade to 7, which I did, all went without a hitch. The upgrade to CS was then bought via download from Adobe.

Thank you for this, I’ve been pulling my hair out for weeks trying to figure out what was wrong! If anyone is interested I believe Symantec has a utility to deal with this very issue, or if not they will very soon. ~Doc
