It seems that cartoonists prefer to color their creations using Photoshop, rather than Illustrator. Is this perception correct? If so, Why? Do they also create the outlines with Photoshop? I am thinking that it would be better to create them in a vector format.

TDOL, I am actually referring to the Marvel kind. My nephew just returned from a comic book seminar in Chicago. He attended a lecture, with a live demo of comic book-type art creation. The person doing the demo used Photoshop exclusively. I have also read at various comic book tutorial sites that they prefer to use Photoshop over Illustrator, but I can’t figure out why.

Rasta, was that the same convention that Clerks director Kevin Smith spoke at?

Possibly drawn first freehand ,then scanned and then colored in photoshop.

You can hand-draw in pen on paper, scan in to PS, run it through Streamline to convert to vector, then color in using PS.

Probably depends on what you like to use. If the final output is print, then PS would definitely be the way to go. If it’s for animations, then use a vector program.

Cheesefood, I although I know that Photoshop is for print applications, I don’t see why cartoons in a vector format would preferably be colored in Photoshop, rather than Illustrator. It seems that one would be just as good as the other, but not sure.

Some one scetches with a pencil, some one inks in black, then they are hand coloured with felt tip pens, or ink pens, some of the newer stuff, not what i realy like, is very CG, you can tell from the angles and back drops, But all the good art is handdrawn. Im a Todd McFarlane fan my self < http://www.fine-art-painting-gallery.com/todd-mcfarlane.html> I have a few sigen and a some origanl cells.
