Please settle an argument…
Some file extensions are pronounced as a word…like "jaypeg" for .jpg. I’ve been doing graphics for a few years now…but the jury is still out for me on the "official" pronunciation of the file extension ".gif" (if there really is one.)

I it pronounced "GIF" as in Frank Gifford…?
(which is how I always said it…and sounds at least phonetically correct to me.)

Or is it pronounced "JIF" as in Jiffy peanut butter…? (a pronunciation that has always annoyed me.)
Or is it really up to the individual…?
"Tomato…tomahto…"
Any valid references to back up your answer would be appreciated. Thanks!

It’s pronounced "jif" – see http://www.olsenhome.com/gif/ for more info. Many references to the originator of the term on this Web site, who stted from the outset it’s pronounced with a "j" sound and not a hard "g".
