I’d like to create two separate images from a duotone so I can eventually make two etching plates, one black the other based on the duotone color. Once I’ve created a duotone, I don’t see how I can do this. (One thought was to go to channels then do a "save as" for each channel, but I noticed the black channel is very dark?)

Print out separations

I’ve only ever done it from Quark and ID, don’t know if it can be done in PS.

David,

A duotone is a single channel file with an ink transfer curve so it is not as straightforward as might be imagined.

You will need to print it to a PostScipt file as separations, and distil into a 2-page PDF. You will then be able to re-open each page independently in Photoshop.

Thanks Len, and can you tell me the steps for doing this?

I see that once I’ve created a duotone, I can save it as an EPS file, or PSD file, but I don’t know how to convert or save as a postscript file or how to create the separations of the PS file.

Best, david.

Place the PSD in InDesign and print.

One of the Output options is called "separations" and will allow you to select what plates you want to print.

But the main point is that you need a postscript printer (or virtual printer) in order to print separations
