Can someone tell me why this is happening all of a sudden?? I have PS 4.0 LE. When I go into explorer to open a jpg…..let’s say it’s called Lisa Myrtle Beach.jpg. Okay, it’s called that until I open it in PS 4.0 LE and then all of a sudden it renames itself something strange like LisaMY~1.jpg. IF I change something on the pic and close it and say save the changes then it permanently changes the pic name to this new name and I have to rename it again. This is getting extremely annoying because I have to rename every photo after I look at them and close them. Why is this doing this?? Is it just to aggravate me? LOL Please help. Thanks.

Because Photoshop 4.0 LE was written before MS standardized long file names.

Chris,

It never used to do that, it just recently started it.

hmm…

there is a solution about launching file manager and tweaking file associations… can’t seem to remember the exact steps.

you’re missing the double quotes surrounding the %1 in the open action in file types. w/o the quotes, it’ll truncate to 8.3 naming convention.

tony? back me up if any of this is wrong… from memory.

lisa,
you can go into win explorer and edit file associations with tools> folder options> file types. scroll down to the type of file you want to open (jpg). and click edit or advanced or something… click the open action in the box that pops up and select the edit button. go to the command line, it should be something like

C:\Program Files\Adobe\PS4LE\PSLE.exe %1

I don’t have any idea what the file name is, so that’s not really important. What IS important is that you add quotes around the %1 (and around the program name). Change the whole thing to read (assuming the above example):

"C:\Program Files\Adobe\PS4LE\PSLE.exe" "%1"

INCLUDING the double quotes before and after the path & exe name and around the %1.

hth, and hope it’s not too far off the mark.
