Would someone kindly explain why photoshop becomes slow if a the default printer is a network printer and it is not accessiblewhile using Photoshop?

All other applications have no problem with this scenario, logically not caring about a printer unless an actual print command is issued, but Photoshop Startup, Open, and New document commands become ridiculously slow if the default printer is not available.

I would like to know the logic behind this behavior. Thanks.

Not true. I remember having problems with CorelDRAW.

And it’s worth noting that not everyone with a network printer as the default is having problems.

It depends on the printer driver being used, and the network protocol being used (Netware is horribly slow if the printer isn’t immediately available).

If it’s a laser printer, download the postscript drivers (Some HP’s have really good postscript drivers)and see if that makes it faster. We found that when we changed from the default drivers and PCL to somewhat real postscript things speeded up on our networked printers
