hello!

i have been a user of photoshop 6 for quite a long time now. never having the need to upgrade to the latest cs edition.
lately however i wanted to test the new versions of ps & illustrator. i was able to test illustrator over the weekend after a hefty download from their evaluation site.

quite nice with all the new fonts, symbols & brushes.

question:

1. what is the difference now between illustrator & ps? illustrator now has raster imports & filters.
2. before ps was to raster and illustrator is to vector. now it seems both are overlapping each other.
3. i am a graphic artist but i find that illustrator is more functional. i get crisp graphics in tiff/jpeg format when exported from vector drawings. in ps i have to use a large file (resolution) for a crisp image.
4. fonts/types are "clearer/crisp" from an illustrator export to tiff. it may be my eyes but you may correct me on this.

5. what would you recommend for graphics/web design work? PS or Illustrator?

thanks

Depends on what you’re doing…

For any work with text, shapes and fills Illustrator (or Freehand) is ideal – as it’s vectors everything is scaleable/editable. As you have found exports to Tiff are crisp.

Photoshop is best for image manipulation, but can also be used for layered work with vector text and shapes… my wee bro’ uses it for brochure layout + web design too.

I use Photoshop, Freehand, PaintShop Pro X and ACDSee for various graphics tasks.

For ‘pure’ web design I use FH, PSPro, PS and Dreamweaver… my bro’ uses PS and Fireworks….

Whatever suits your way of working really.
