i was working on a grayscale image. i filled a selection with 80% black but the color info tab returns a black value of only 74%, meaning when i eyedrop the selection i filled with 80% black, it gives me a 74% value. how can this be? i made sure that i got 100% layer opacity & my fill tool set to normal or overlay. still the same thing. since this image is a link in my illustrator file, i checked it in illustrator hoping to get the correct black value. worse, the illustrator eyedroper returned a C-51.37, M-41.57, Y-39.61, K-5.1 value. this is the first time i encountered this. hope you guys can help me figure this out. thanks.

Try altering the "Sample Size" of the eyedroper on the toolbar. There are 3 settings, "Point Sample", "3 by 3 Average", & "5 by 5 Average".
Does that make any difference?

I did exactly what you said Mick, didn’t make any difference though. Thanks a lot anyway. I hope there’s somebody out there who can explain this. The case may seem like a negligible problem, but if you work in a prepress environment, this is BIG DEAL! We have to make sure the color values are output accurately.

p.s. forgot to tell you that the eyedropper reads the color value correctly if the image is converted to CMYK. But i need this as grayscale. =(

It was worth a try I suppose. 🙂
I have been trying to replicate your results, and managed to get a similar thing, depending on whether I used a true grayscale image, or a desaturated one!

e.g. if I open a colour image, and convert it by going to – Image / Mode / Grayscale,
then when bucket filled with 80% black, the info reads exactly 80%

But if I open a colour image, and convert it by going to – Image / Adjustments / Desaturate,
then when bucket filled with 80% black, the info reads exactly 71% (Weird!!!)

Is it possible that you are Desaturating your image instead of using the Grayscale mode?

Well that’s it, I’m all out of ideas now, so If that doesn’t help, I hope someone else can 🙂
Good luck
Mick
