Good morning all, when I open an image, for some unexplained reason, there appears, in the top left hand part of the image window a small icon. It has a dark grey background with 01 in a box and then what appears to be the mountain icon found on digital cameras for the ‘vista’ view, ie one larger pyramid with a smaller one behind.
Whilst this icon doesn’t seem to do anything it is rather irritating so how do I remove it? I’m using Photoshop 7
Thank you in advance for any help.
Regards
Bryan

Look at the FAQ.

It’s a Slice icon. You can turn it off.

Ed, thanks for ‘slice’ icon name…with that additional input it was easy to find and remove….I did check the FAQ but if one goes to FAQ and searches for ‘icon’ one would grow old reading everything listed hence my post asking for additional help.
Thanks again for the directions…much obliged.

in the top left hand part of the image window a small icon

Reading everything listed by a search in the FAQ for ‘Icon’ wouldnt be necessary as the relevant FAQ is plainly titled "icon in top left-hand side of image", and displays as the fourth search result.

True, Mats…

But even that doesn’t excuse the rat-poor abilities of the search functions for these forums.

I know you know what I’m talking about!

I definitely vote with Phos on the forum searches, and the Help in Photoshop isn’t any better. I can usually find things faster with Google (which sometimes refers me back to an Adobe page).

I can agree to that. I’ve got a nifty Google bar in my browser for when I prefer that, though. My point was more that we’re trying to name our FAQs in a clear manner, to aid users within this limited format.

" My point was more that we’re trying to name our FAQs in a clear manner…"

Now, if we could only convince the planet that threads entitled "HALP! MY ADOBE IS BROKE!!!" just aren’t the best way to get help, we’d really have something, eh?

"HALP! MY ADOBE IS BROKE!!!" 🙂

There’s too much foo-foo at the top of the forum page. The "FAQ" part is too hard to see unless you’ve seen it before.

I suggest replacing:

Welcome to the Adobe Photoshop Windows Forum.

Before posting a question, click here to view the comprehensive Frequently Asked Questions which cover all the common and not so common issues.

with something more visible like:

Read the FAQ before posting here.

(in 18pt. black, but with "FAQ" as a hyperlink in 24pt. bold red).

Use <font face="Trebuchet" size="+5" color="red">THIS</font> to get THIS.

Thanks, Michael!

That brings up another question: how did you display that HTML code literally without having it interpreted as HTML code? I looked at the source code of this page, and the only clue I see is the Less Than and Greater Than characters display in red.

One more, if you will: where can I find a list of font face names, sizes, and colors that this editor can accept?

We could tell you, but we would have to shoot you.

Actually, he used the entity for the < sign at the start of each tag: &lt; which translates to < onscreen and prevents a tag from starting.

Now, how do you thing I made &lt; appear without it changing to a <?

Good heavens, if I had known my post was going to cause such a furore I would have left the icon there.. but please lets remember this… not only have I learnt what the icon was I have also learnt how to remove it, I now also know what a slice is and where it’s used and more than that I now know to give the ‘search’ facility more information when looking for answers to the questions you professionals must find so mundane and therefore irritating..it’s a learning curve and I thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Further..I see where I went wrong..I went to the knowledgebase search…in the forum search, as Mathias quite rightly says, the answer is already there…I am off to write out 10,000 times ‘I must try the forum search’…

No furore about it Bryan.

One of the great things about these forums is the way a thread such as this – where the original question was answered in the first post – can go off on various related tangents. Not only is the banter good (most of the time!) it also furthers the spread of knowledge. Even the die-hard regulars find the odd "golden nugget" to add to their collection.

Stick around and enjoy the ride 😉

@Bryan: My apologies for hijacking your thread–I thought you were finished, and I intended only to take advantage of the moment to learn from the gurus. And furor? Ha! You should see what this place is like after a real furor–hurt feelings, screaming, bullet holes in your screen, blood all over the place! 🙂

@Don & Michael: Thanks for the Cracker Jack Secret Decoder Ring; I promise to keep it oiled and out of the hands of villains!

But look, you had so much fun helping me with nested entities that you forgot to address my other question: "where can I find a list of font face names, sizes, and colors that this editor can accept?" I would guess that the sizes and colors might be standard, but what about limitations of font names?

The only limitation of font names is what’s installed on the end users machine. You could use Jensen Bold, and it would display correctly on machines that had that font installed. On other systems, it would revert to browser standard font, or the forum standard font (depending on the style sheet used in the forum).

It’s a classic mistake beginners make in web design:

Choose a real fancy font – maybe one you downloaded for free – and the page will look fantastic on your browser. 🙂

Rob. That’s closer to home than Tony’s mermaid.

I think I’ll venture a little further afield though.
