Are your images local or on a networked computer?
Locally located. Thanks for your interest.
Not sure I will be able to help, but more info will certainly be of use to anyone who can help. Are the files PSD, TIF, JPG, what? If PSD or TIF, do they contain many layers? What is a typical file size on disk, and the size once open in Photoshop? How long to open or save? Does a JPG open at normal speed? If so, and you then Save As a PSD, does it take a long time? How long? Has it always been slow, or is this a recent change it behavior? Any hardware or software changes at about the time it got slow? How much RAM, how much scratch space, and have you changed the default 55% allocated to Photoshop?
Is your default printer on the network? And is it available when things slow down?
Do you have any off-brand anti-virus software installed? Or any other file or drive related utility?
I am trying to uninstall any new programs recently installed. Also, I will try and work on a new printer I installed that is on a network! Thanks for your input Chris and Zoe. I will let you know how it goes.
Thank you all; who tried to help. I uninstalled the three most recent software products I had placed on my PC. PS CS2 is working like a breeze now. Must have been some conflict. I also took my network printer off (as default), and later on re-making it a default printer, there weren’t any problems with PS CS2. Both the software and the printer were new additions to the PC, so they must have been to blame. Probably not the printer, since it is still prsent, and no problems with PS.
Thanks, all!
What was the offending software?
It might help others if we knew.
CSS Style Master and CSS Style Studio.
I think my network printer is actually to blame. The same problem recurred, so I de-selected my default printer (Lexmark E120N), and things returned to normality!
I thought so. It’s a problem we see relatively frequently here.
And it varies with printer drivers and spooling software.
We have asked Microsoft to fix the API, and we are investigating ways that we can work around the timeouts in the future.
