To anyone who may assist me:

I have downloaded Nikon View, which was what the people at Nikon told me I could use to input my RAW digital pictures into Photoshop. I also downloaded the Camera Raw 3.5 from the Adobe website because I saw it was this version which matched up with the Nikon D100.

So where I am at now, is that I can successfully convert my raw pictures so they can be partially used in Photoshop6. I can crop them, level them, etc…anything from the top pull-down bars. However, I cannot use the clone stamp, paint brush…that is, most anything from the side navigation bar because it gives me an error message "the tool does not work with 16 bit per channel images (convert image to 8 bit per channel to edit)." How do I fix this? Furthermore, is it even possible to successfully utilize Photoshop 6 with original raw picture files. And if so, how and what program or downloads should I be using?

Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

No version of Camera Raw works with Photoshop 6.

And I’m not even sure that Nikons utilities will work with it directly.

And the error message that you type SAYS how to fix it.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I think you’re right about raw images not working with Photoshop 6. What about Photoshop 7? Also I am not that good at Photoshop, for reasons I will spare you. Nonetheless I don’t know how to fix that channel per bit error–>that is part of the reason I wrote this note on this message board. If you could help on this on, I would be greatly appreciated.

I don’t know how to fix that channel per bit error

* Have your Nikon software output 8 bit files

or

* Upgrade to the latest version of Photoshop

There was a RAW addin for Photoshop 7 that is no longer available; it worked only with files from cameras for which it was developed, about 4 years or so ago. The current version of Photoshop is 9, also known as CS2, and the current RAW converter only works with the current version.

LEt me repeast the message: "the tool does not work with 16 bit per channel images (convert image to 8 bit per channel to edit)"

Do you see the last bit, in parenthesis?

That tells you exactly how to solve it.

Or you can follow ChrisBirchall’s advice.

Perhaps you are not familiar with the menu required to convert the 16 to 8 bit? Go to: Image menu > Mode > 8-bit
