I was able to pick an object and move it around, but I could not select it to copy it. I finally discovered that if I control clicked a layer, then the copy would light up and I could get it done. I could select wwhatever I wanted and copy it. I understand I’m a newbe but theres no excuse for something as basic as this to be so obfuscated. Its still not clear to me what is happening when I control click the layer, but it works. Its my guess that there are a lot of people that spend the $100 bucks on this and when they get to this one little quirk, after they blow their top, they never open Photoshop again. Maybe I missed it, but there should be something in the help menus that points someone to a tutorial on what do do when this happens.

I know exactly how you feel, I put my version 5 away for 18 months before I decided to get my head around it and I am glad I did.
When you "control click" a layer, you are loading a selection. The best way to illustrate this is to open a new document, insert a text layer (T on keyboard) and then type some text. Commit the text and then control click on the text layer icon, you will see your text surounded by the "marching ants", indicating it has been selected. With this selection active, you can select other layers (it’s transferred to them) in your stack and manipulate the text selection by filling with other colours or patterns and even deleteing the colour within the selection. Turn your text layer off so as to see what’s happening. This is a very useful function.
When you move an object, are you not just moving the whole layer about and not a selection in the layer? Have you checked the help files for "making selections" and "laoding selections"? As you say this is a very basic function, or should be and making selections for any reason is a fundemental and necessary skill with PS see
http://www.pixel2life.com/search/4/copying%20selections/1/ for various methods of making and copying selections, some harder than others. BTW, it is an excellent site for all things PS, bookmark it. Unless you are sat along side someone in a class, there is really no easy way to learn about this, it is down to you to struggle (apart from help from NG’s) with it until you get there, but believe me, it is well worth it. After all, if it was an easy prog to learn and use, then anyone would be able to use it wouldn’t they 😉
Hang on in there,
Regards

All I want to do is copy an object.
Please help me make "copy" light up.
Thanks
Bill
Before you can copy anything you need to make a selection, so it knows what you want to copy. Try the Marquee tool (M) or Lassoo tool (L) on the keyboard to make your selections.
