Are TIFFs written differently in PS7 and CS2?

Hi,

We have upgraded to CS2 from 7 and we’re having some problems.

An old machine that we have needs to read TIFFs that we create and although they can be opened the image is corrupted on screen. I’ve opened the TIFFs on a different machine and the image is fine.

Is there any way to write the TIFF (in CS2) in the same way as PS 7 did? If not, is there some sort of filter/plug-in that would do the job?

Thanks.

If the tiff is fine on the other machine, it sounds like it’s the old machine that’s the problem, not the image file.

I agree. The image is technically correct, but the old PC cannot read it properly. However, we can’t change or upgrade the old PC.

The only solution is to either go back to PS 7 or find a workaround within CS2 – if there is one.

Anybody any ideas?

Is 7.0 fully patched to 7.0.1? And if you absolutely need to use it, then I would disable the advanced TIF features in CS2 and try again.

If it’s a machine that only knows how to read tiffs from ages ago, try saving the tiffs without profiles, and no compression, and try changing between mac and pc byte order. Now if it really is a bad machine, it may need a new hard drive or ram, or else I wouldn’t trust that it won’t mess up any files regardless of how they are saved.

Robert,

Yes we used 7.0.1. How do I disable the advanced TIF features – I can’t find anything in Preferences?

IN the Save d/box for TIFFs

Len,

I don’t see anything that disables any advanced features. There are options but they all choose one thing or another.

Whatever options I choose the PC in question scrambles the image.

The ‘advanced options’ in the Tiff d/box are:

Save Transparency
Image Compression
Pixel Order -> Per Channel
Save Image Pyramid
Layer Compression

and in the Save d/box are
Layers
Alpha Channels
Spot Colours

I have written a plugin <http://telegraphics.com.au/sw/#tifflibplugin> that uses the open source libtiff <http://www.remotesensing.org/libtiff/> library. Please try it out. Some people have reported problems, I’d like to hear if it works for you.
