I have PS 7. I have no idea why this happens and im getting more and more frustrated and angry – when I use the color picker, it selects the background color by default. So if I have a brush selected, press alt and click somewhere, the color I pick ends up in the background color slot, meaning I have to press x afterwards to use the color I just selected (if I have the color picker tool selected I have to press alt to get the color to the foreground color slot).
I have gone through all setting I can find to no help, tried to reinstall, Ive searched the internet and help files for an answer but nothing. I hope someone here can help me because im ready to throw my computer out the window right now.

In the Color Palette (Window>Color) click on the foreground swatch. A "focus ring" will appear around it.
It’s in the FAQs on the Mac side… surprised it is not here as well.

Actually, just typing in your exact words “selects background color” in the forum search section here returns a solution halfway down on the first page of results.
