im new to photoshop and even newer to digital colouring. im having a few problems that im hoping you folks will be able to help me with.
1. Burn dodge, even brush and tools like that. when using these tools i get a very dotty stroke when i move my mouse it just doesnt give a proper line in my opinion heres what i mean…..

2. Colouring using the lasso tool. ive been following this tutorial < http://www.steeldolphin-forums.com/htmltuts/digital_colorpar t2.html> using the lasso tool to colour areas of a sketch http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a282/danfitchie/lassotool.jpg
the person that did this tutorial and even one of my flatmates gets perfect edges after the fill the closed off area using the lassoo tool, my edges are absolutely crap, blurry pixelated and just plain rubbish and i just dont know why http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a282/danfitchie/shockingpixels.jpg

3. in general my paintings are very pixelated in on photo im zoomed in 700% and you can hardly see pixel whereas in the second they are incredibaly pixelated just at 400%

I didn’t look at the links, but I would say, check the Brush spacing in the Brushes palette and also make sure the Blending is Normal. And the feather on the lasso (should be zero). I personally would not use a lasso for this anyway, but to each his own.

Your image (especially where you are editing consists mostly of shadows and midtones but you have ‘Highlights’ selected for modification.

This is going to depend on the resolution of you document, the amount of ‘Feathering’ you have selected and if you have ‘Anti-alias’ selected. Compare these settings with your friends.

3. in general my paintings are very pixelated in on photo im zoomed in 700% and you can hardly see pixel whereas in the second they are incredibaly pixelated just at 400%
I saw nothing surprising in either document. Maybe you can explain your problem in a different way.

Good luck,

For point 3:

Are you saving as .jpg? .jpg is a lossy format, so each time you resave the .jpg you are degrading the file. You should save your working file in some format such as .tif or .psd and don’t output to .jpg until you know you are going to do no more editing on the file.

ticked the spacing option and that looks like its solved the brush issue, not tested properly yet though. i do all my saving in .psd format. i only do jpegs when i have finished my work

hmm the spacing issue fixing the paint brush and the dodge tool but the burn one still does the same old thing even with spacing on

Check the percentage of the spacing for the burn tool. Is it the same as for the other tools?
