Totally normal. It just means the layer is selected for editing.

Hide what? Choose another layer? Why do you want to hide it?

Close ImageReady. It’s a separate application that opens with your image if you click on the Jump button at the bottom of the tools palette.

Here’s what he’s telling you.

Photoshop comes with another program called Image Ready. The screenshot you showed us was a screen shot of Image Ready, not Photoshop. There is nothing you can do about that second column in Image Ready, it is intended to assist you in discretely linking layers.

Photoshop CS2 does NOT have that second column in its layers palette because they changed the way one can link layers. So if you have Photoshop CS2, you won’t see it there, but you WILL see it in Image Ready.

If you have Photoshop 7.x or earlier (I don’t remember about CS), that second column will ALWAYS be there because that is how one links layers.

So if you are in image ready and don’t know it, I’m afraid for you. If you have a version of PS prior to CS2, you cannot get rid of that second column, period.

You are looking at a completely different program from Photoshop. So, yes, if you have Photoshop CS2 open you will not see the paintbrush after you close ImageReady. If you have a different version of Photoshop open you will.

Do you see your open programs in the taskbar at the bottom of your screen (or wherever you put it)?
