There is a link on the Adobe home page to download the Photoshop CS3 beta.

<http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/photoshopcs3/>

At this time I get a "page not found" error.

Must have been premature. There’s no mention of a CS3 beta on either the Adobe home page or the labs home page. Perhaps there is a closed beta that accidentally got listed the wrong place, and you can only reach the beta download page if you’re signed in as one of the official beta testers.

I think someone may have hacked the Adobe page. Adobe has never done a public beta on Photoshop, and I don’t believe it would do it.

I think someone may have hacked the Adobe page. Adobe has never done a public beta on Photoshop, and I don’t believe it would do it.

It disappeared within 10 minutes of me first spotting it. It showed up at the same time that other content, including the Adobe Reader 8 download, appeared in the Announcements section of the main page.

I had thought it odd, as I would not think they would release a beta version of Photoshop.

Also, there was no graphic to accompany the link, but instead a small bit of text.

This is about the time I would expect the beta to be released, but as mentioned, not the the general public. Perhaps someone slipped up putting the link on a public page.

A slip like this…well it is Fall, isn’t it?

No Adam no! It’s nearly Christmas,

I dare Adobe to make the beta public.

Well, that is flawed thinking. Until Lightroom Adobe never has done public betas. At least not that I can remember.

Adobe Atmosphere was a public beta.

I should have said never done a public beta of a main stream product. My mistake.

They’ve never done a public beta of an established product.

Why?

I’m sure you can think of a million reasons… Confusion in the market place, unstable software, hesitation to upgrade to shipping product etc etc.

Public betas are often used as means of promoting a new product. Stable ones use the beta for its true purpose, finding late bugs in the product. To do that effectively, you want to limit the number of beta copies to a controlled number who you can deal with.
