Getting background from image

Hi group, even though I am not a newbie at photoshop I need advice on the following problem. I have a portrait picture of two kids which have taken, and the background has a pattern in it, as they put a background board behind them.

I want to know how to either get the colour and pattern of the background or if it is possible to clone, as I want to use the background in another picture, with someone impose on the background. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
