Can I use photoshop to take a clip art image and make it in to a children’s coloring book page? I just want the outline of the image, no gray shading.

I tried this but it didn’t take away the color . . . does the picture have to be in a particular format first? And there are several seclections once I choose bitmap.

Impossible.

Bitmap mode is only pure black and pure white

And there are several seclections once I choose bitmap.

You’ll have to play with them to find out which one works best for your image.

Julie,

You will have more control over the resulting coloring page by drawing it yourself, using the photo as your guide. The automatic methods tend to pick up too much extraneous detail, and create a design that is difficult for a kid to color.

Create a layer above the photo on the background and choose a Brush (not the Pen tool, which can be tricky to control) with a hard edge and about the size of the line thickness you want and just trace on the contours you want to keep in the coloring book page. You will be drawing on the layer, and not the photo itself.

You will probably want to draw in pure black, although that is your choice. And you can vary the brush width if it pleases you.

You probably will want to create a tracing paper effect by creating a white layer between your drawing layer and the background photo. Then set your Opacity on the white layer to about 50% so you can still see the photo while you are drawing.

You can always set the Opacity back to 100% to see your final drawing.
