am trying to select an imagine which is currently on a white back ground and then copy and paste this image onto another background colour. is this possible?

Probably would be best to make the Background a Layer (Alt-double click on it in the palette) or duplicate it and turn off visibility on the Background and work on the duplicate.

Try the Magic Wand in the white area and delete or (preferable) make a Layer Mask to hide the white.

Aside from that, this is probably the most discussed Photoshop procedure and there are scads of tutorials about it on the web. Depending on the image there are several ways to go about this.

BTW, if you start a paragraph with a lower case "i" on this forum it will be read as a tag to make your text italic.

You might consider placing the layer with the desired object above the layer with your background then try the various blend modes with their associated opacity settings – probably your best candidates will be ‘Multiply and Screen’. There is more you can do with masks and ‘Levels’ but that is more involved.
