I just upgraded my computer from Win ME to Win XP. I have an OLD version of Photoshop (3.0), and later upgraded to Photoshop 4.0. I never used either one on Win ME–I used Photodeluxe. Now Photodeluxe will not run on XP, and I’m wondering if I can install Photoshop 3.0 on XP? Do I need to install that before I install 4.0?

Any help is appreciated.

I very much doubt that PS 3 or 4 will run in XP, if you did an upgrade from ME what are you PC specs?

Thanks for replying, Mike. I’ve got a Gateway 20GB (rapidly shrinking!), 1200 MHz, 384MB RAM.

Paula,

I think you would definitely have trouble running the later versions of PS with your PC, maybe OK with 5,6 or even 7. When you upgraded to XP from ME did you you do a clean install or put XP "over" ME? If the latter, I have only seen problems with this type of upgrade because any issues with ME are not corrected when upgrading to XP. Also XP "overheads" can make a fast ME PC (the worst Windows O/S BTW) into a sluggish XP machine. As to disc space, if you did install XP over ME, you should have the oportunity to revert back to ME and consequently this functionality takes up quite a bit of space on a small H/D due to the required files that allow reversion. If you have no intentention of reverting you should be able to remove these files via Control Panel>Add/Remove progs.
As to your initial question, why not try and install 3 to start with, then the upgrade, if you do manage to insall 3, the worst that can happen is that it won’t run. You can upgrade (not worth it on your PC) from any version of PS but you would need proof of purchase on pre v5 (I think) and you would need to ‘phone Adobe.

Best of luck

Yes, I did a clean install (I heard about the problems installing over ME which IS, BTW, a horrible OS!)

You’re right–I’ll give it a shot–got nothing to lose! (My PS is so old, the installation is on floppy disks!)
I’ll let you know what happens. Thanks again for your help.

One more thing. . .

As to disc space,

I have no intention of reverting back to ME. Do you happen to know the names of these files so I can remove them?

Thanks.

Please do, there is a poster who frequents this NG that uses v3 but he runs it on ’98 I think. V3 is orders of magnitude less functional than the current offerings, as the price illustrates. If you would like <90% of the functionallity of PS, have you considered PS Elements? You should be able to find it for a tenth of the price of the full blown version.

You won’t have them if you did a "clean" install, so you have nothing to go back to.;(
