I have a series of party shots I want to resize and assemble into a slide show. I want to automate the process. Some are vertical, most horizontal.

Now, I want first to resize the image so that they are, say, 8×10 at 300dpi. The problem is this; I cannot automate it using size, as I have to enter height and width numbers. Of course the height of a horizontal 8×10 is 8, a vertical 8×10 is 10. If I automate using the horizontal I’ll get 8 x10, but the verticals will be 8×6.4. So, without setting a different action depending on orientation, can I set size up such that the long dimension is 10 (or whatever) and the short would be 8 (again whatever), ignoring the orientation?

I can’t be the only one who has had this problem!

Use File>Automate>Fit Image. It’s made for just this situation.

Lawrence. Ed’s advice is spot-on of course.

However: If you’ve got CS2 use the "Image Processor" which can be found in the Bridge "Tools" menu.

It does exactly what "Fit Image" does, but more intuitively and with more options. You can even set it to run an action (to sharpen perhaps) as it processes the files.

Give it a whirl.

I guess I’ll have to activate CS2! At the moment, ACR is available gratis even though CS2 isn’t activated.

I looked at Ed’s suggestion, and it certainly isn’t intuitive. There is no help either for "Fit Image".

Ok, I open a file, click the path and I get a box saying "Constrain Within" and it gives the pixel dimensions. Well, they are alreay that, so what? I click OK, History notes Image Size, but when I go to change the actual size, again it simply changes things as it does before using "Fit Image". The pixel dimensions change.

It’s automated so what does that mean? My guess would be to start an action, invoke "Fit Image, but now I also want to rescale the whole job using Batch, which is also under Automate.

Anyway, for now, I need a slide show so I allowed the verticals to be hight limited and ran the pdf. I don’t think my client will be printing from the cd. When they order prints I do have files at the original size.

There’s a trick to Fit Image. I haven’t used it in a while, but you need to input your desired longest dimension in both fields I believe. It definitely works. You just have to tinker with it.

Yes, it’s just incorporated in the script of the mighty Image Processor.

You don’t need that unless you need the other cool features.
