In Photoshop CS2, is there any way to create crop marks around specific areas of the canvas automatically?
For example, could one make a rectangular selection and have Photoshop apply crop marks at each corner?

I’ve searched the online help but can only find info about the crop tool, nothing about making crop marks. I realise I can create them manually, but that’s tedious!

Why not use the rectangular marquee tool, select the area of interest and then stroke the selection with a thin line to indicate the crop? This sequence could be made part of an action with little effort. If done on a separate layer it will be "non destructive" to the original image…

I use the single row selection tools (vertical and horizontal) use the shift tool so all 4 lines are active at once. Make sure you have created a new layer of course, then stroke 2 or 3 pixels. Then i use the rectangle marquee tool and delete about 3mm into the intersection, which leaves the crop marks with 3 mm bleed.

I couldn’t believe there wasn’t a tool either.!!!

Photoshop is not a production and layout application. If you think you need crop marks in a Photoshop file, you are probably mistaken, and would do much better to layout and output through InDesign or Illustrator.

You can print crop marks when you print from Photoshop, but you can’t "include" them in the image.

To print crop marks when printing:

Select "Print with Preview" – on the left hand side, under the preview, cahnge the drop down box to "Output".

You should now have check boxes to include center and/or corner crop marks, as well as registration and calibration bars.

Having previously used all the Adobe software mentioned above in a professional environment, I am well aware of what the main purpose of each package is.

However, outside that professional environment, I can only afford to purchase one of these for personal use, and I chose Photoshop. This means that I therefore have to be ‘creative’ in how I use the software!

As I said in my post, crop marks can be created manually of course. Having only just jumped from PS7 to CS2, I was curious as to whether all the bells and whistles of CS2 happened to include the ability to create them automatically.

Thanks to all who shared their manual methods for creating crop marks. If nothing else, it surely emphasises that, for whatever reasons, people do indeed have a need to ‘include’ crop marks within a Photoshop image/document.
