My old computer(has now passed on) had photdeluxe 3.0 on it. I had edited and saved a bunch of pictures which are now pdd files. My new computer has Photoshop 3.0 starters edit. This will not open the pdd files. How can I get them open so that I can get them converted??????

Try changing the file extension from .pdd to .psd in Windows Explorer.

If it’s Photoshop 3.0 it’ll be Photoshop Elements you have.

This is the Photoshop Windows forum.

However, if Len’s advice (rename in Windows Explorer) doesn’t work, you could try downloading IrfanView; open them in that and save as PSDs.

Just right click on the file and rename it. There’s an easy way to batch this in Windows but my brain isn’t fully functional right now. I’m sire someone can tell you how.

Tell him how, someone!

Note that you do have to have file extension viewing enabled.

Ed, that just renames the file, not convert it.??

John, IrfanView will not view it or convert it either. A black picutre comes up with "Photoshop 3.0 is required to open this field" I get this same message with every viewer/converter that I have tried.

As far as I know pdd and psd are the same thing. So no conversion necessary, only renaming. Did it not work?

Ed, no it did not work. It just renamed it.

Jeff,

It just renamed it.<<

That’s all it is meant to do.

A .pdd file (Photoshop Deluxe Document) is identical to an RGB mode .psd (Photoshop Document). The only difference is that a .pdd file can ONLY be rgb – no greyscale, no indexed colour and no CMYK.

So having renamed your filename.pdd to filename.psd it should open in any application that supports the .psd format. That does NOT mean that double-clicking it will open it, but should open from a File > Open operation.

Len, it does not change the file type though. It is still a .pdd file. Or I am not changing it correctly. Right Click, rename, does not change the file type. It will only change the name.

<Sigh.>

Make sure you have file extensions visible.

Select a file in Windows Explorer.

Right click and press "Rename".

Highlight just the letters PDD and type in PSD.

Press Enter.

Do you mean click on view, then click on details..so that it shows everything?? That is what I have done. Or do you mean something else about having file extensions visible??? As for file type it say’s Photo Deluxe.

I meant what I wrote not what you thought.

Don’t you know how to use Windows Explorer – in particular the file management functions?

from Windows Help:

To change the name of a file or folder
Open My Documents.
If the file or folder you want to rename is not located in My Documents or its subfolders, use Search to find it. To open Search, click Start, and then click Search.

Click the file or folder you want to rename.
Under File and Folder Tasks, click Rename this file or Rename this folder. Type the new name, and then press ENTER.
Notes

To open My Documents, click Start, and then click My Documents. Some programs cannot interpret long file names. The limit for programs that do not support long file names is eight characters. File names cannot contain the following characters:
\ / : * ? " < > |.
You can also rename a file or folder by right-clicking it and then clicking Rename. The names of system folders such as Documents and Settings, Windows, or System32 cannot be changed. They are required for Windows to run properly.

I understand what you are saying, but this just renames the file not the file type. I have a file called cake in windows explorer, it shows cake then the file type is photo deluxe (in all the convert programs and viewers that I have tried it shows pdd for the file type). If I rename the file cake.pds in windows exporer the file type is still photo deluxe and in the convert or view programs it is still listed as cake.pds.pdd

As has been mentioned a couple of times already – you need to change the extension of the filename from pdd to psd.

Firstly, go through John’s post explaining how to display the file extensions in Windows Explorer.

You’ll then see that the file you have called "cake" is really called "cake.pdd". Change the name to "cake.psd" and you’re all set.

To repeat what has been said a couple of times – this only works if you have set Windows Explorer to display file extensions.

The pdd and psd file types are the same, within certain constraints as Len indicated, so renaming should work. Maybe you typed it wrong: PSD, not PDS.

XnView lists pdd as a file type it will read so it should open them.

The only other thing I can suggest is that you get a copy of PhotoDeluxe and see if THAT will open them. Maybe they are corrupted.

Jeff,

it does not change the file type though<<

IT DOESN’T NEED TO!!! The ONLY difference between a .ppd file and an RGB 8-bit.channel .psd file IS THE FILE EXTENSION. There is no ‘changing” to be done other than the file extension.

What Windows ‘thinks’ it is is neither here nor there. Windows is pretty brain-dead (or at least primitive) when it comes to file types. What matters is that the application you are opening it in knows what file type it is.

Jeff,

In Windows Explorer, click on the Tools menu item, and select Folder Options.

Click on the View tab, and deselect the item that says "Hide extensions for known file types".

All your files will now be shown with their extensions.

cheers

I understand, but I am not getting the file extension changed. When I bring it up in XnView it comes up as cake.psd.pdd Maybe I should just try to find a copy of photodeluxe 3.0 and go from there.

Jeff,

In Windows explorer select Tools>Folder Options.

Then select the View Tab.

Now uncheck the checkbox that is labeled "Hide File extensions for known file types" and click ‘OK’.

Now when you view your file details in Windows Explorer, that ‘cake’ will have changed to ‘cake.pdd’. Change it to ‘cake.psd’ and you should be fine.

Len Thank you, I have it changed but it still comes up as a black picture that says photoshop 3.0 is required to open this file. I’ve tried a few different viewers. Now I can not get into photshop album starter edition 3.0. I have the problem posted in the correct forum this time. Thanks for all your help.

I understand, but I am not getting the file extension changed. When I bring it up in XnView it comes up as cake.psd.pdd

That’s because you haven’t changed the extension. The extension is .pdd, and you need to change that to .psd, and you can only do this if the extensions are being displayed in Windows Explorer.

If the file is showing in Windows Explorer as cake.psd, but is coming up in XnView as cake.psd.pdd then you are not displaying the file extension in Windows Explorer.

If the file is showing up in Windows Explorer as cake.psd.pdd then rename it to cake.psd, and you will be able to open it in Photoshop.

If he had Photoshop he would be able to open them without changing the extension.

XnView claims to be able to open pdd files. Don’t know why it didn’t for him.

For the sake of others reading this thread, Jeff has Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.0 — not Photoshop, not Photoshop Elements. Album has quickfix type capabilities, but it is not a full fledged editor.

Photoshop and Photoshop Elements can, of course, read PDD files. I don’t know about Album Starter Edition, I couldn’t find anything that listed supported file formats for that product.

IrfanView and XnView should have been able to read the PDD files and convert them to JPG which Album certainly should support. If they couldn’t, it points to something funny with those files. The black picture and error message that he got from IrfanView suggests that the composite image was missing from the file. I can’t remember whether PhotoDeluxe gave you the option of omitting the composite or not. Photoshop and Photoshop Elements omit the composite if maximise compatibility is turned off.

I think you have put your finger on it.

It’s been a long long time since I had PhotoDeluxe on any machine (got it on disk somewhere around here) but I don’t remember what if any options there were when saving files.

Jeff will have to find the right product or someone who has the right software.

Hey there Jeff! Don’t be discouraged….you’ll get it
straightened out.
You’ll probably have a hard time finding a copy of PhotoDeluxe, and to be honest, you don’t need to. Do you know anyone who has PhotoShop or PhotoShop Elements? Either of these programs will open this document. Just copy the pictures to a thumbdrive or CD and take them to a friend’s house who is using PhotoShop or PhotoShop Elements, and you can then open them, and resave them as TIFF files. You can save them as PhotoShop files (PSD files), but if you don’t have any program that will open a PDD file, then you most likely don’t have a program that will open a PSD file either.
If you save them as TIFF’s, most programs will open them, so that might be your best bet.
I also have PhotoShop Album….versions 1 and 2.(I think they came with one of my flatbed scanners and one of my digital cameras). You can’t save anything with that software. If you open a picture and edit it, the software automatically saves it with the same file extension. It won’t let you change the file extension to another format. (at least version 1 doesn’t. I haven’t installed version 2). Anyway, try that out, and it should work.
