Smart object issues

I created a rectangular button with the shape tool between a couple of guides. Now I converted that layer to a smart object. I duplicated the smart object to create an additional button.

How can I increase the size of the button later on?

Upon editing the smart object itself it seems like the canvas is limited to the size of the original button shape. When I upscale the button, or say I want to create an outer bevel, the effects are out of the canvas bounds and after saving the smart object .psd. the buttons won’t update.

I tried increasing the smart button’s canvas size but that causes my buttons to appear smaller.

I can resize one of the button’s in my webpage.psd file though but that won’t affect the other button. Also when I make changes to the smart object file later on, my button sizes will get screwed up.

What’s the advanced theory behind smart objects and how should I overcome this issue?

Thanks in advance…

Just use Free Transform.

Yes, the child document is sized at exactly the size of the original layers. If you want it larger, you need to increase the document size.

And you still need to use free transform to resize the parent document’s representation of the child document.

I kind of figured that out recently.
The thing is, when you increase the canvas size of the child document, and resize the shape in the parent document -so it becomes the same size as it appears in the child document- the borders of my shape will be equal to the bounds of the canvas in the child document.
That’s a bit awkward to work with because they aren’t at the edges of the shape anymore.

I tried grouping a transparent layer together with the shape layer into a smart object but that doesn’t work. My canvas size in the child document stays equal to the size of the shape.

However, if you create a new layer and fill it with a solid color, the group it together with the shape layer into a smart object, you can edit the smart object and remove that solid layer. That way, the canvas size of the child document is equal to the canvas size of the parent document.
It will allow you to increase the size of the shape now and keep the bounds of that shape in your parent document.

I guess there is no other way.

I hope this makes sense… perhaps you should try it out. Anyway, I hope this might help some other users.
