I am having difficulty using the "extract command." After opening a file and making a duplicate layer, I choose "filter" but cannot choose "extract," i.e., "extract" is light grey not black. Could someone help me? Thanks.

Hi Brian,
It could be that you are working in 16bit mode. Extract will only work in 8bit mode.

Convert your file to 8 bit.

Extract is one of the tools/filters which still doesn’t work in 16 bit mode.

And if the Beta is anything to go by, it won’t be implemented in CS3 either! 🙁
